About the workshop

Active teaching is educational activity which involves students in the material being taught using reading, writing, discussions, and problem-solving. Active teaching helps students tackle tasks that require critical thinking such as analysis, synthesis, and evaluation.

Active teaching is based on two fundamental assumptions:

  • By nature, learning is an active process
  • Different people learn in different ways.

Many studies have demonstrated the importance of active teaching and active learning. Yet, the lecture remains the most widely used method of teaching in the academic world. Active teaching enhances the students’ involvement in the process of learning, helps them to assimilate the material during the lesson and not only in preparation for a test, and generates interest in the course content. Likewise, it improves students’ learning capabilities, develops critical thinking, helps to identify and solve problems, and enables interaction both between the lecturer and students and among the students themselves.

Learning Outcomes:

In this workshop we will get to know innovative teaching methods which enable active teaching in small and large classes: peer instruction, discussions, the application of various technologies, and correct lesson planning. At the end of the workshop you will be able integrate all these elements into the general structure of the course and in the lesson itself.
